A donations scandal is once again looming for New Zealand First, but the party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters remains defiant.

News reports on Tuesday raise questions about how the party uses the New Zealand First Foundation to handle donations. And the coverage had already piqued the interest of the electoral watchdog - the Electoral Commission has received a complaint and it will also seek more information from the New Zealand First Party.

And as RNZ political editor Jane Patterson reports, the National Party says the Prime Minister needs to take charge and make sure there's no whiff of scandal around Labour's coalition partner.
