Fourth person reported dead after switching anti-epilepsy drug

A 26-year-old is the fourth person to die shortly after changing from a branded version of the anti-epilepsy drug lamotrigine to a generic version, Logem.

It comes after a u-turn from Pharmac on Friday. The drug buying agency now says patients can work with their health specialist to stay on the drug that best suits them.

Veronica Schmidt from RNZ In Depth talks to a mother who says her son died in August after he made the switch to Logem, and she won't give up until it's taken off the shelf.

Pharmac got in touch on Friday to confirm Medsafe told the organisation about the death on Friday.

It says it is working with Medsafe and the Centre for Adverse Reactions Monitoring on this and other adverse event reports.
