Extended debate continues at euthanasia bill's final reading

From Checkpoint, 6:09 pm on 13 November 2019

MPs continue to rise to their feet to argue for and against voluntary euthanasia, during the bill's third and final debate.

The End of Life Choice Bill, a member's bill in the name of ACT leader David Seymour, would allow terminally ill adults to request either a lethal dose from a doctor or nurse, or take it themselves.

Three hours has been allowed for the debate, which means twice as many speeches as usual.

The second reading debate ended with a vote 70-50 in favour of the bill, meaning 10 MPs will have to change their mind to derail it on Wednesday.

And if it does pass, New Zealanders will have the final say at the ballot box at next year's election.
