"Indignant and defensive" - that's how Winston Peters has been described upon learning he'd been paid too much superannuation over some seven years.

The High Court in Auckland heard from the Ministry of Social Development, with a manager laying bare her actions after discovering the overpayment.

The legal action was launched by the New Zealand First leader who argues his privacy was breached in the weeks before the 2017 election.

RNZ deputy political editor Craig McCulloch is covering the case.
