School counsellor caseloads dangerous - association

From Checkpoint, 6:12 pm on 1 November 2019

The heavy caseloads of some school counsellors are appalling and dangerous according to their professional body.

The NZ Association of Counsellors represents about 2,500 counsellors including those working in schools, in the welfare and justice system and in private practice.

Earlier this week Mike King's gumboot fund - a charity that provides free counselling revealed it was out of cash after a massive rush on services - including more than $900,000 worth of counselling in a single month.

NZAC president Christine MacFarlane says it shows there are enough counsellors - but they need to better funded and every school needs to have the right ratio of counsellors to students.
