Rural rugby fans frustrated as Spark wins more broadcast rights

From Checkpoint, 6:20 pm on 10 October 2019

It wasn't just the rugby causing angst among sports fans across the country, with the news that Spark has stumped Sky and bagged the broadcast rights for cricket games in New Zealand from next year.

Some fans were pleased, saying they've grown increasingly unhappy with the cost of their Sky subscriptions, and that streaming is the way of the future - particularly if some free-to-air games are on TVNZ.

But Lisa Pease, who lives near Otorohanga in Waikato, says she's infuriated at the deal, after a frustrating experience streaming the Rugby World Cup with Spark.

She says rural people are continually disadvantaged when it comes to watching sport and she's angry at today's news.

She told Alex Perrottet in no uncertain terms what her internet speed is like.
