UK expresses regret to Ngati Oneone for deaths under Cook

From Checkpoint, 6:10 pm on 2 October 2019

At an emotional gathering the UK government has expressed regret to a Gisborne iwi whose ancestor Te Maro was shot dead by Captain Cook.

The British High Commissioner, Laura Clarke delivered the official statement at the statue of Ngāti Oneone's Te Maro on Titirangi Kaiti Hill.

The iwi says it's where Te Maro lived and managed gardens that fed five marae and it was more appropriate to gather there than the landing site where he was killed.

Lisa Owen asks Nick Tupara from Ngāti Oneone what the UK High Commissioner said.
