New Zealand will crack the five million people mark next year according to Census 2018 data released on Monday.

The detailed information has been a long time coming and follows delays caused by a failure to collect all of the necessary data and scrambling to find the information from other Government sources.

RNZ political reporter, Jo Moir has the story.
