NZ spies received information from tortured detainees - report

From Checkpoint, 5:45 pm on 9 September 2019

An investigation by the intelligence watchdog into whether New Zealand's spy agencies were complicit in torture in Afghanistan has been released - four years after it was first launched.

Back in 2015 the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security decided to investigate any involvement New Zealand agencies might have had in the infamous CIA programme in Afghanistan, from 2001 to 2009.

That programme was part of America's response to the 9/11 attacks, and was heavily criticised as carrying out torture and other illegal acts by the US Senate Committee on Intelligence.

RNZ political editor, Jane Patterson, joins Lisa Owen with the details.
