Māori man rejected from Australian restaurant for tā moko

From Checkpoint, 5:55 pm on 5 September 2019

A Māori man has been turned away from a Melbourne restaurant because of his full-faced moko.

Touch rugby coach Gary Harding, from Ngāti Porou, booked a table at Village Belle for a thank you dinner for another coach, who had flown over from New Zealand to give some training sessions.

But as he told RNZ reporter Meriana Johnsen, he was turned away at the door on Saturday. He says despite contacting the restaurant multiple times about the incident, they have not responded.

The Village Belle has not responded to RNZ's request for comment.
