The head of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage looks likely to keep her job despite a security breach exposing hundreds of people's private details to fraudsters.

Bernadette Cavanagh revealed the Ministry had uploaded copies of passports, drivers' licences and birth certificates to an external website without sufficient protections.

About 300 mostly young people have been caught up in the breach. The Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is responsible for the Ministry and has expressed disappointment in the error.

She told her weekly post-Cabinet press conference that a review is looking into exactly what went wrong, but she does not expect a resignation letter from Ms Cavanagh.

Jacinda Ardern says Cabinet has also signed off on an immediate directive to go to a range of ministries and government departments.

The agencies - which include the Ministries of Defence, Transport, and Housing - will have to immediately review any ICT projects planned or underway.

They will also be required to use an approved list of providers for any web or digital services.
