Photos have been taken all over Canterbury of some kind of object hurtling through the skies about 6pm on Monday night.
Lisa Murray from Rangiora said she had gone outside to feed the animals - rabbits and guinea pigs - when she heard a noise.
“Looked over out to the west and saw this odd thing coming from the sky.
“I did hear a noise, at the time I didn’t even think it was a sonic boom but now that people have mentioned that’s what it was it makes sense.
"I wasn't really sure I heard a bit of a rumble and then heard … the best description would be you know dropping a boulder or something really heavy into the back of a truck.
“That sort of big, loud, bang noise.
“We do live close to a landscape supply place so I sort of said ‘maybe that’s what it was’, but now that I’ve read people describing the sonic boom it does kind of make sense.”
It’s as yet uncertain what the object was.
