Your Place - Clive

We're in the town that was once the business centre of Hawkes Bay. Its residents still claim it as the geographical centre of the province too, although its population is fewer than 1600 now days. In 1844, Napier was a small hillside settlement surrounded by water and swamp, Hastings wasn't even thought of, but at Clive Grange, about 10 kilometers south of Napier, a small township was started after brothers, Barney & Joseph Rhodes, built a trading post. A short time later the Reverend William Colenso set up his Ahuriri Mission on 10 acres of swampland close by, and Joseph Rhodes commissioned Henry Tiffen to survey and lay out a settlement of six hundred quarter acre sections interlaced with streets named after prominent politicians.
