Cooks pondering water system sludge problem

From Pacific Waves

The Cook Islands Government turned on the taps for its shiny new water reticulation system in Rarotonga last week.

Prime Minister Mark Brown says the system, which cost $US65 million dollars to build over seven years, is the biggest infrastructure project since the construction of Rarotonga's airport.

The government says residents are now enjoying clean, clear water but an environmental campaigner, Andy Kirkwood, says it still has to work out what to do with the sludge that settles in the intake tanks in the hills of Rarotonga.

He explained to Don Wiseman.
