Fijian footballer Trina Davis safely home from Tel Aviv

From Pacific Waves

Fiji women's football international Trina Davis is back with her family in the United States after a terrifying week trying to escape the conflict in Gaza.

The 19-year-old became the first Fijian woman to sign a professional deal when she joined Israeli side ASA Tel Aviv University SC in March.

But the Israeli Women's Premier League was cancelled earlier this month with two games still to play after fighting broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

Davis had been due to fly home to her family in Seattle next month but booked a flight to the return to the US last Friday, only for it to be cancelled on three occasions, while the US Embassy said it was unable to help her because it did not deem the situation to be an emergency.

Her parents finally managed to book a flight with Israeli carrier El Al, who were still flying to the US.

Davis departed early on Monday local time and touched down in New York at 5am Tuesday morning before she was finally reunited with her family in Seattle.

RNZ Pacific sports reporter Vinnie Wylie spoke with Ms Davis shortly after getting home, he joins me now, so how is she holding up Vinnie?
