The tropical rainforest of Papua New Guinea is one of the last great blocks of forest still standing in the world, but trees continue to be harvested, and exported, often illegally.

There have been government attempts to rein in the offenders going back more than 30 years, but the usually large, well funded conglomerates undertaking the logging, are still finding ways to break the rules.

The executive director of the PNG Institute of National Affairs, Paul Barker, told RNZ Pacific's Don Wiseman that while SABLs or Special Agricultural Business Leases, were outlawed a number of years ago, they continue to be used by the loggers.
