Debate has erupted in New Caledonia after calls to separate its pro and anti-independence provinces.
Unrest continues in the capital Noumea, with the nephew of a prominent pro-independent Kanak shot and killed last week and more armoured vehicles arriving from France.
Some social network commentators have labelled the suggestion as tantamount to a Pacific-style apartheid.
