Bougainville is now a step closer to having its referendum go before MPs in Papua New Guinea.

In 2019 Bougainvilleans voted 97.7% in favour of independence from PNG in a non-binding referendum that was put in place by the Peace Agreement which officially ended nine years of civil war.

MPs will now be required to ratify the referendum.

The Minister of Affairs, Manaseh Makiba, told parliament what was needed before the referendum can be tabled.
