Pacific Islands Forum rift mended in Suva

From , 6:02 am on 9 June 2022

In a watershed moment, leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum have agreed on way to prevent Micronesian countries from breaking up the premiere regional body.

The row came to a head in February last year over the selection of a candidate for the Forum's top job.

Micronesia was annoyed its candidate Gerald Zackios was overlooked in favour of the former Cook Islands prime minister Henry Puna.

A high level meeting was held in Fiji yesterday - RNZ Pacific's Fiji correspondent Lice Movono covered the meeting and filed this report.

This file picture taken on September 5, 2018 shows flags from the Pacific Islands countries being displayed in Yaren on the last day of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
