Fiji election campaign period starts without an election date

From , 6:02 am on 27 April 2022

Fiji's election campaign period is officially underway despite the lack of an official election date.

Electoral Commission chairperson, Mukesh Nand, announced the start of campaigning on Tuesday local time explaining that under the country's laws this was one month before the earliest date that the election writ can be issued by the president, which is May 26.

The only parameter for the end of campaigning is that it will be 48 hours prior to the date of the general election which is yet be announced by the president Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Joining me is, Jonathan Pryke, the director of the Pacific Islands program at the Australian thinktank the Lowy Institute..

Bula Jonathan so campaigning is now underway is that your understanding as well?
