Climate change commission accused of moving emissions goalposts

From , 6:00 am on 1 March 2022

Lawyers for climate action are taking the New Zealand climate commission to court this week claiming they moved the goal posts on counting the country's carbon emissions.

The lawyers accuse the commission of using a different way of counting emissions than they were supposed to rendering New Zealand's climate action inconsistent with keeping global warming within the 1.5degrees target set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.

They are arguing this could be in breach of the Zero Carbon Act and international law.

Joining me is the Te Whanganui-a-Tara coordinator of Pacific Climate Warriors, Kalo Afeaki. Maloelelei Kalo and welcome on Pacific Waves.

How does this court case impact Pacific peoples here in Aotearoa and in the region?
