How significant is Blinken's Pacific tour?

From , 6:02 am on 12 February 2022

The United States secretary of state, Antony Blinken, has been touring the region this week to "engage with Indo-Pacific allies and partners to advance peace, resilience, and prosperity across the region."

Most of his time has been spent in Australia for the fourth Quad Foreign Ministers Ministerial Meeting which also includes Japan and India.

On Saturday Blinken has a six hour stopover in Fiji, the first time since 1985 a US secretary of state has visited, where he will meet with Pacific Island leaders.

Blinken's final stop will be in Honolulu Hawaii where he will meet with the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea.

With me to talk about this Pacific tour is Massey University security studies senior lecturer Anna Powles.
