Solomons PM condemns rioters, calls for calm

The Solomon Islands capital comes out of a 36 hour lockdown today which was imposed on Wednesday by the prime minister after major unrest in Honiara.

The trouble stemmed from a protest against the government that led to a building being torched at parliament precinct, before leading to more destruction and looting in town.

Many of the protesters come from Malaita province whose local government, and many of its citizens, have been at odds with the national government
