Kiribati master weavers urge elders to share their knowledge

From , 6:00 am on 12 August 2021

Two master iKiribati weavers in New Zealand are urging elders within their communities to do more to share their knowledge with younger generations.

Kaetaeta Watson and Louisa Humphry share over a century's worth of cultural knowledge and experience between them.

They are regularly invited by iKiribati communities around the country to teach weaving and crafting techniques.

I caught up with the pair earlier this year while they were handing over an iKiribati woman warrior's armour piece they had designed to the Te Papa Museum.

iKiribati master weavers Kaetaeta Watson and Louisa Humphry are on a mission to pass on their cultural knowledge to the next generation of iKiribati weavers.
