Punanga Tauturu left in lurch

Rarotonga's only anti-domestic violence group say police have left them in the lurch when it comes to working together to prevent abuse in homes.

The Cook Islands Women's Counselling Centre - Punanga Tauturu- mainly works with survivors of violence and abuse.

But they have also seen an influx of perpetrators seeking help with changing their behaviour and breaking the cycle of violence.

Eleisha Foon spoke with Punanga Tauturu coordinator Rebeka Buchanan who says a multi-agency approach is crucial and is calling for the renewal of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with police which lapsed in 2017.

In a statement a Cook Islands police spokesperson said the lapsed MOU was still in review - largely due to the ongoing personnel constraints within the police and the added strains of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.
