A new environmental report is offering a blueprint for ocean conservation that its authors say will provided a combined solution to several of humanity's most pressing challenges.

Study in Nature: Protecting the Ocean, was published this week in the prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journal, Nature today.

It calls for the strategic conservation of specific ocean areas which it says will help combat climate change, protect biodiversity and improve fishing and food security.

Produced by an international team of 26 authors, the study advocates for a global effort to protect 30 percent of the world's oceans by the year 2030.

One of these authors...National Geographic chief scientist for the pristine seas programme, Alan Friedlander, joins me know.

So what is this study and how was it conducted?

Waves of the Pacific Ocean break against jagged rocks on the shoreline of New Zealand. Off shore over the blue-green waters of the Pacific Ocean stand several small, rocky islands.
