Surf Life Saving New Zealand's latest Beach & Coastal Safety Report shows Pasifika, Māori and Asians are over-represented in drowning figures.
The report, released this week, says that on average 36 people drown every year along New Zealand's coastlines.
It also revealed that most drownings occurred on beaches without lifequards or outside of patrol hours, and that 87 percent of victims are male.
