World warned of nutrition crisis: Pacific children hardest-hit

From , 6:01 am on 18 February 2021

A new report released by Save the Children warns the world is on the brink of a nutrition crisis with pandemic-related malnutrition projected to kill an average of 153 children a day over the next two years if immediate action is not taken.

The report titled, Nutrition Critical: A Foundation to End Child Poverty, found the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change have led to an increase in poverty, loss of livelihoods, and reduced access to health and nutrition services.

Jacqui Southey of Save the Children New Zealand says the rates of hunger and malnutrition have also soared.

Ms Southey says even as Covid-19 threatens to reverse years of progress made in the battle against malnutrition, 11 million children under five continue to face extreme hunger or starvation today.

Jacqui Southey  tells Christine Rovoi that Pacific children living on the frontlines of the pandemic and the climate crisis are most at risk.
