French Polynesia reimposes quarantine requirements

From , 6:01 am on 10 February 2021

A quarantine requirement is back in force in French Polynesia as of today (WED NZ), ending more than a half a year of quarantine-free travel to Tahiti and its islands.

The Covid-19 pandemic shut down the territory last March but in July it reopened its borders and lifted quarantine measures which saw thousands of tourists flock to what has been the only accessible tourist destination in the South Pacific.

However the free travel saw a spike in Covid-19 cases from less than 100 to now over 18,000 with over 130 people who have died from the virus in the territory.

The quarantine requirement which starts today was reimposed after France last week ordered the borders to close to all but urgent cases of travel.

Walter Zweifel has been following the story and I asked him about the new conditions.
