From , 6:01 am on 5 February 2021

Fiji authorities have detained then deported the vice-chancellor of the University of the South Pacific Professor Pal Ahluwalia

They moved quickly.

Professor  Ahluwalia and his wife were awoken and whisked away from their home late last night by plain-clothed Fiji immigration officers who let themselves into his residence.

The vice-chancellor and his wife were transported to Nadi from where they were deported to Brisbane.

Our correspondent in Fiji, Lice Movono, says the academic was merely told by Immigration that he was deemed a threat to public safety.

Professor Pal Ahluwalia has been appointed the new vice chancellor and president of the University of the South Pacific.
