The United Nations has warned there is a poor understanding of HIV/AIDS in the Pacific and the stigma relating to it in the region.
UNAIDS Pacific says this makes it difficult for those who are newly diagnosed to accept their HIV-positive status.
The agency says HIV/AIDS has always been seen as a death sentence, but points out that technology and science have allowed people with HIV to live a long, healthy life, just as any other chronic disease.
