Education shortfalls blamed for PNG's sorcery-related killings

A former teacher in Papua New Guinea says the deteriorated state of education in the country is a main factor behind ongoing killings related to sorcery beliefs.

Michael Yasso is a former head teacher at a school in East Sepik province's Angoram district where several people were killed in the past week having been accused of using sorcery to hurt others.

Belief in sorcery is widespread in PNG, but the justice sector has struggled to contain attacks on people implicated in accusations, especially in remote communities.

Michael Yasso told Johnny Blades the latest killings in Angoram are not unusual.
