Call for better pastoral care for Pacific workers in Aust

A candidate for the Mildura Rural City Council in Australia, Dean Wickham, wants to ensure more is done by the council to provide pastoral care for seasonal workers from Pacific Island countries.

The ongoing impacts of Covid-19 notwithstanding, several thousand Pacific Islanders are employed in Australia's Seasonal Workers Programme, and are considered, as they are in New Zealand, a vital part of the sector.

Mr Wickham, who has a Solomon Islands heritage but has lived in the Mildura region for 32 years, says he has been trying to improve the pastoral care for these workers since the programme started.

He told Don Wiseman about some of the issues.
