Groundwork for independence referendum starts next week

From , 6:01 am on 4 September 2020

The most populated province in Solomon Islands is threatening to break away and form its own country, and the groundwork for a referendum will begin next week.

It's all been triggered by the government's decision to switch the country's foreign policy to recognise China instead of Taiwan.

Since then, the outspoken Malaita premier Daniel Suidani has been a thorn in the side of Honiara government, and now he's threatening to break away completely.
