Coronavirus: Cases resurgent in some parts of the Pacific

From , 6:02 am on 11 August 2020

And the need to do so safely is paramount - with the pandemic still raging worldwide, and becoming resurgent in some parts of the Pacific.

On Guam, the relaxation of lockdown measures was wound back this weekend after a large surge in cases.

All bars have been ordered closed for at least two weeks, and the number of people allowed at social gatherings has been halved - from 50 down to 25.

And in French Polynesia, which last month became the first Pacific destination to reopen with no quarantine restrictions, the government there has reported another community outbreak of Covid-19.

It has confirmed 18 cases in the past week - all since the restrictions were lifted.

They include an American woman on a cruise ship, a cluster from a restaurant event in Papeete, and two policemen.

Meanwhile, the total number of confirmed cases in Papua New Guinea surged past 200 at the weekend - as fears grow about the capacity of the health system to cope.

Most of the cases are in the capital Port Moresby, but infections have now spread to eight provinces including the two far flanks of the country: West Sepik in the west, and Bougainville in the east, both registered their first case in recent days.

The West Sepik governor Tony Wouwou says the teacher, from Vanimo High School, had just returned from Moresby, and was tested after displaying signs of sickness.

Test results are pending for other members of the teacher's family and colleagues who travelled to Port Moresby with him.
