From , 6:03 am on 30 July 2020

Papua New Guinea authorities are investigating the mystery crash of an Australian registered aircraft near the capital.

The Accident Investigation Commission in PNG was alerted to the signal of an Emergency Locator Transmitter near Papa Lealea about 30 kms west of Port Moresby on Sunday.

Investigation teams reached the area of the distress signal on Monday morning and found the wreckage of a partly burnt Cessna 402C twin engine airplane.

But they didn't fnd a pilot, any passengers nor much in the way of cargo.

The plane was not cleared to fly in PNG, and aviation authorities weren't aware of it before the emergency signal.

The ABC has reported that amid mystery over who owns the plane PNG police believe the pilot was Australian, with a tracker app showing he'd flown from Queensland that day.

PNG police sources have said that traces of cocaine were detected onboard the plane.

Winston San Martin is the Investigations Manager for the PNG Accident Investigation Commission. Johnny Blades asked him what is known about this incident.

Details are still sketchy but PNG authorities are investigating the crash of this Cessna 402C near Port Moresby over the weekend.
