Fiji's $US1.7bn Budget comes under heavy scrutiny in Parliament

From , 6:02 am on 30 July 2020

Fiji's parliament is divided on the nation's historic $US1.7 billion Budget for the 2020-21 financial year.

Delivering the budget two weeks ago, the Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum also announced a $US930 million stimulus package to fund the country's recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then, the opposition and the government have locked horns in discussion of the budget, with it being labelled anything from irresponsible to deceiving.

But as Christine Rovoi reports, sparks began to fly this week when a can of fish was introduced to the house.
