The push to get more Pasifika into Med School

From , 6:01 am on 29 July 2020

Dr Colin Tukuitonga wants more Pasifika students studying at Auckland University Medical School.

At the moment about two percent of the medical school roll is filled by Pasifika students, but Dr Tukuitonga says, ideally, the numbers should match the size of the Pasifika population in New Zealand, at 15 percent.

The former head of the Pacific Community, a senior office holder at the World Health Organisation and the chief executive of the Ministry of Pacific Peoples, is now Associate Dean Pacific at the Medical School.

While Maori numbers at the school have been on the rise, Dr Tukuitonga told Don Wiseman about his quest to get more Pasifika enrolled.

Collin Tukuitonga sits on the board of the Health Quality & Safety Commission.
