A candidate for the Bougainville North women's seat, and long time advocate for women, Helen Hakena, says alcohol bans make matters worse.
A ban is in place until the end of the election in September with the police chief, Francis Tokura, saying offenders will face charges.
But Ms Hakena, who for many years has headed the Leitana Nehan Women's Development Agency, told Don Wiseman banning alcohol causes more problems, and is "a silly idea."
