Bougainville seeks clarity on ratification

From , 5:01 am on 20 March 2020

The Bougainville Government is seeking clarification of what's meant by ratification.

Last year's referendum, in which 98 percent of Bougainvilleans voted for independence, can only be enacted once ratified by Papua New Guinea.

A process of consultation between the governments of Bougainville and PNG has just begun which could take years to resolve before an outcome is ready for ratification.

The Bougainville President John Momis told Don Wiseman it's vital the referendum result is front and centre when PNG's parliament considers ratification, which is why he wants to know what it means.
