The Cook Islands Opposition says a parliamentary clerk, who was sacked over a cost blowout for parliamentary renovations, has been made a scapegoat.
Tangata Vainerere lost his job after the cost of work to extend the parliamentary debating chamber went 50 percent over budget.
He has told the Cook Islands News his alleged legal breaches, such as failing to seek tenders, are the crux of his sacking, but he's understood to be seeking legal redress.
The Opposition Democratic Party leader, Tina Browne, told Don Wiseman he has been hung out to dry after being expected to do something that was outside his role as clerk of parliament.
