Niue has become the world's first Dark Sky Place following the International Dark-Sky Association's (IDA) approval of the island's application for the protection of its sky, land and sea.

Chief executive of Tourism Niue Felicity Bollen says the formal protection includes a marine reserve which is 40 percent of Niue's exclusive economic zone.

Ms Bollen says the Huvalu Forest Conservation area which contains some of the world's most threatened flora and fauna is also protected.

Niue's dark skies are now protected under the International Dark Sky Association.
