Critical consultation period gets underway in Bougainville

Consultations over Bougainville's future are getting underway in what is described as a critical stage in the region's independence process.

An overwhelming majority of Bougainvilleans voted for independence from Papua New Guinea in the non-binding referendum held near the end of last year.

Before the referendum result goes to the national parliament for ratification, extensive negotiations are to take place between the PNG and Autonomous Bougainville governments.
