Death threats against Tonga's PM under investigation

From , 6:02 am on 26 November 2019

Tonga's police commissioner has thanked New Zealand police for launching an investigation into death threats made against Tonga's Prime Minister, Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa.

The matter came to light last week when the chair of the Tongan Advisory Council asked police to investigate after he received complaints from members of the Tongan community in Auckland about threats made on social media.

The PTOA party of the celebrated late prime minister, 'Akilisi Pohiva, has been blamed for the comments but party principals in Auckland have denied their members are involved.

Don Wiseman spoke with our Tonga correspondent, Kalafi Moala, who says the man accused of the threats has gone public to say his comments were made in jest.
