Manus Island refugee: PNG's Bomana 'worse than prison'

From , 5:01 am on 13 November 2019

A refugee detained for six years in Papua New Guinea by Australia has escaped to Canada but he holds grave fears for others still in detention.

Through Canada's private sponsorship programme for refugees, Amir Sahragard is now in Toronto thanks to the group Ads Up, or Aussie Diaspora Steps up.

The 27-year-old from Iran was one of about 75 men still in PNG not given refugee status, yet Canadian screening found him to be a refugee.

Ben Robinson Drawbridge spoke with Mr Sahragard, who asked him why PNG did not recognise him as a refugee.
