Former Tongan PM hits out at Australian criticism of death penalty

A former Tongan Prime Minister has hit out at the Australian High Commissioner after he advocated for the death penalty to be abolished during a speech in Nuku'alofa.

At an event marking World Day Against the Death Penalty, Adrian Morrison identified the death penalty as one of the few points of difference between Australia and Tonga.

He said Australia was not only against the death penalty, but was actively working to convince others, including Tonga, to abolish it.

But former Tongan Prime Minister, Lord Sevele, told Koro Vaka'uta the speech was "undiplomatic and patronising".
