Tonga Govt calls for Popua wetlands inquiry

From , 6:05 am on 5 November 2019

Tonga's government has announced a Commission of Inquiry into a controversial wetlands development in the capital, Nuku'alofa.

The development of a park and subdivision at Popua was spearheaded by the former prime minister, 'Akilisi Pohiva, who died last month.

The cabinet secretary, Edgar Cocker, last week announced that the Privy Council had decided to launch the inquiry, as much of the decision making behind the development needed to be investigated.

'Ana Taufe'ulungaki, a former government minister who's now the head of the Tonga Heritage Society, spearheaded the opposition to the project.

She told Jamie Tahana that much of the work to the historically and ecologically significant site has already been done.
