Struggling Fijian sugarcane farmers eye alternatives

From , 5:03 am on 31 October 2019

Some sugarcane farmers in Fiji are moving to alternative crop and vegetable farming so they can make ends meet.

Last week, farmers received their final cane payment of $US5 per tonne from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

The industry has been struggling with a drop in production, global price and climate change.

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Ritesh Dass, told Christine Rovoi that the ministry will support cane farmers who want to diversify.
