Delight at move to care for Cook Islands' soldiers graves

Six Cook Islands First World War soldiers will be added to the New Zealand and Commonwealth War Graves Commission's official rolls of honour.

Ten cases were brought to the attention of New Zealand Defence Force historian John Crawford in 2017 by the Cook Islands High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Another person instrumental in getting the Defence Force to consider the cases is Australian Cate Walker.

Ms Walker has been campaigning to improve the care of graves in the Cook Islands, especially of military veterans, after discovering the rundown state of a Rarotonga cemetery when trying to locate the grave of her mother more than four years ago.

She says she's delighted by the decision.
