China not setting Pacific 'debt traps' - report

From , 6:03 am on 22 October 2019

China isn't setting 'debt traps' in the Pacific, a new report has found.

The research released on Monday by Australia's Lowy Institute contradicts much of the criticism of China's influence in the region.

It found Chinese loans are not a deliberate attempt to entrap Pacific states, although they could lead to debt problems if protections aren't improved.

Mackenzie Smith spoke with one of the report's authors, Roland Rajah.
